Hosting explained

1What is Shared Hosting?
Shared hosting is where your website is being hosted on a server where many different websites are being hosted. Each website having its own domain name. Shared hosting provides everything a business needs to create a website and a presence on the web but is not sufficient for websites with high traffic volumes.
2What is VPS Hosting?
VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. This hosting is like having dedicated hosting but in a shared hosting environment. Its both shared hosting and dedicated hosting in one option.
3What is Dedicated Hosting?
Dedicated hosting means that your website is the only one on the server being used. It also comes with increased speed and extra security. The client is charged extra for the extra services and convenience.
4Why is VPS Hosting better than Shared Hosting?
Shared Hosting is great for all businesses to get on the internet and create an online presence. However, once your website needs start to grow you may need to consider VPS Hosting. As your business grows so will your need for more disk space, to keep more files, and more bandwidth to handle the increase in traffic to your site.

VPS is also useful for custom software installations.
5Why is Dedicated Hosting better than VPS Hosting?
VPS Hosting are meant for medium sized businesses and you are still technically sharing a server with other websites. This means the actions of others may still affect your website. Also, with Dedicated Hosting you are renting your own server and have enormous amounts of disk space, bandwidth, better security and more speed.
6Linux Hosting vs Windows Hosting
Linux hosting is compatible with PHP and MySQL, which supports scripts such as WordPress, Zen Cart, and phpBB.

Windows hosting, on the other hand, uses Windows as the servers' operating system and offers Windows-specific technologies such as ASP, .NET, Microsoft Access and Microsoft SQL server (MSSQL).

Website Security

1Backing Up
Backing up your website files is one of the best ways to secure your website. The cPanel includes backup facility where you can backup your entire website including your database, email and website files. Here is a tutorial for more information about Website Backups.
2Website Vulnerabilities
Most websites are run by Open Source software. Open Source software are available and free for anyone to download e.g. Joomla and WordPress. These software's are easy for hackers to load and view the coding. Hackers will then study the code and find ways to compromise the website.

The authors of Open Source Applications constantly release updates and security patches to counteract this. Please make sure that your website is always using the most up to date version of any third party software you're using.
